The oyster villages of Lège Cap Ferret

All began with inhabitants of La Teste de Buch and Arcachon who came to the peninsula by boat to practise there fishing, oyster farming and activity of resinage. At that time, there were no houses. Therefore, they had to sleep in boats called "pontoon". One thing leading to another, real villages were established made of coloured wooden huts. Nowadays, these villages have kept their traditional aspect thanks to the precious resource that is the oyster. Each hut is assigned by the maritime domain to a professional of the sea.

The must-sees

Each village has its own charm and its personality fluctuates with the tides and the seasons. Thus, we advise you :

  • L'Herbe, for its authentic little village with its colorful huts and its famous Moorish-style chapel
  • Le Canon, for its animation, the life of its village and the breathtaking view of the Bassin d'Arcachon
  • La Conche du Mimbeau in Cap Ferret, where its landscapes and view of the Dune du Pilat are breathtaking
  • Le Four-Les Jacquets, for its small oyster farming village accessible only on foot, which gives a unique atmosphere to the place
  • Piraillan, where nature lovers will be delighted to discover the reservoirs of Piraillan! This nature reserve of about 40 hectares is full of all kinds of fish, and each season, the fauna and flora of the Piraillan reservoirs evolves. More than 350 plant species are identifiable. You can follow one of the two marked walks or benefit from the accompaniment of a specialized guide.

Tastings

In each village, you will find oyster tastings. A concept between the restaurant and the direct sale of oysters by the oyster farmers. Indeed, you will be offered shellfish, shellfish, pâté, accompanied by a glass of white wine and water from the Abatilles spring.

However, you will not find any ready-made dishes or soft drinks for children. This way you can experience the family feel of these establishments and discover the art of living in this part of the Bay of Arcachon. It will also be an informal way to talk to a professional about this profession which is above all a passion.

To end the day, head to Le Phare du Cap Ferret where 258 steps and 57m in height await you to discover the most beautiful view of the Bassin d'Arcachon ! The Cap Ferret lighthouse, as you see it today, dates from 1947. Indeed, the lighthouse built in 1840 was destroyed by the Germans at the end of the war, deserting the place. You will also see on the site a "vestige" of the bunkers of the time! Once up there, the lighthouse offers you a breathtaking view of the entire Basin.

Thus under your eyes, the Dune du Pilat, the Basin, the Bird Island and the Atlantic Ocean...

As our campsite is a family-run, intimate establishment, with the emphasis on calm and relaxation, we are unable to accommodate groups or family gatherings of more than 8 people.
Thank you for your understanding.
